Yesterday I wrote about how Obama is continuing Bush’s program of spying on everybody all the time because, what the heck, nobody’s paid any attention to the constitution since 9/11 and as long as you can just throw anybody you don’t like in the hoosegow and never let them out again, even torture them a bit, listening in on a few phone calls is small potatoes.
I wrote about how I’m not too surprised or outraged. Perhaps that’s because, even though the level of government overreach is totally outrageous, it’s not surprising. We have the technology, and you know damned well that the people at the top have absolutely no conscience. There may be a couple of exceptions here and there but, for the most part, you don’t get successful in politics by having a conscience.
One of my major points yesterday was that there are so many of us out here typing away that the government can’t possibly spy on us all.
And that is true. But….
Today somebody posted this article on my facebook page. It’s an amazing world, this cyberworld and we’re learning more about it, and its potential, every day. Basically, woman on a train gets pissed off at jerk across the aisle who’s bragging about how much nookie he’s getting, and his wife/girlfriend (the article didn’t specify, and I think that’s a rather important distinction) doesn’t know a thing about it, so she took a picture, uploaded it to her facebook page, and voila, millions of hits.
Reading some of the comments, I was surprised at how many people were angry with her for what she did. Admittedly, she may have fucked up the guy’s life. Admittedly, she may have caused a great deal of pain to his wife (or girlfriend). Also, admittedly, if I was cheating on my wife (which I have no plans to do, by the way, but just for the sake of argument), I wouldn’t want to get caught.
Which is why I wouldn’t be bragging about it, loudly, on a train, within the hearing of a female, or in fact within earshot of any passengers who might conceivably have a cell phone and a facebook account, which is all of them.
I salute what the girl did, actually. She spread information, and it had an impact. But the other side is, we don’t need to worry so much about the government fucking us up. Other people will fuck us up. If we’re not careful.
