A Day at the Zoo

We went to the zoo

it was overdue

we hadn’t been there for a year or two

The sky above was turning gray

so lots of people stayed away

it wasn’t crowded at all today

Which is one thing I hate about the zoo sometimes is too many people.  Ideally, there should be fewer than there are animals.

Another reason it wasn’t too crowded is because it was only half open, the bottom half of it got flooded (again), so some of my favorite animals had been evacuated, presumably to other zoos, and we didn’t get to see the gorillas or the mountain goats, and the penguins had been moved to the upper part, where they looked like uncertain tourists, walking on grass under trees.

Sam didn’t want to go.  I knew, however, that if we left him home alone he’d just play football  on his x-box all afternoon, and it’s too much, really, so, we made him come.  It was the right move.

The new elephant valley is a huge improvement in the elephants quality of life, they are no longer on concrete slabs with chains around their ankles, and they seem to have expanded the herd.  There were 5 or 6 of them, and I think they used to have just 2 or 3.  Of course, there was the baby elephant, just a few months old, and baby animals are inherently cute.

I still felt a bit bad for the elephants, though.  They are big animals and, despite the huge improvement from where they were before, still have a smaller pen than the giraffes.

The kids were most impressed with the African bug exhibit.  Cockroaches.  Gross.  And particularly a minute mantis like creature which was almost indistinguishable from the plant he was hanging onto.  That was pretty cool.
