I find it bizarre that there is so little news, and so little discussion about Edward Snowden now that he has been offered asylum. I suppose there are a few little details to be worked out, like how is he going to get from Sheremetyevo to South America, and does he need to have Venezuelan (or Bolivian, or Nicaraguan, because apparently once one country in the world decides it will stand up to the United States, others are ready to follow) travel documents before the trip, and will other nations kindly refrain from shooting down the plane while it’s over their airspace, and stuff like that, but essentially it’s a done deal.
Three nations have offered him asylum. Pretty cool nations, too. I could easily imagine myself in Bolivia, high up in the mountains, listening to the sound of the pipes, or in a hammock by a beach in Nicaragua. Venezuela might provide more opportunities, and they’ve got plenty of beautiful jungle, too.
I am quite relieved. Partially, because I was concerned about Snowden’s welfare. More than that, though, as the days turned into weeks and the weeks went by, I had begun to worry that there was no country in the world willing to stand up to the United States.
That is worrisome. It is dangerous to the future of mankind for one country to so thoroughly dominate the world, and even more so when it is a country that is ruled by corporations, where the bulk of the populace lives in oblivion and ignorance. One big power that means you’re holding everybody else back.
So, I am relieved that 3 countries have stepped forward. But, I am disturbed that there seems to be so little discussion of it.
