Singularity

We’re off tomorrow for a 3 day weekend in the country, so I’m not 100% certain how my internet access will be, but i will try to get my blog written every day.  Actually, it might be better because I’ll be less focused on the news and more on the beautiful Krkonoše mountains.

This.  Our solar system has a tail like a comet.  Or like a rat.  I don’t know that this discovery has any importance at all to those who are not planning on immediately  leaving the Solar System, but it looks seriously cool and the amazing thing about it is it’s not just something we didn’t know before, it’s something we didn’t know we didn’t know.  I suppose some scientists may have theorized this, but  I sure had no idea it was there.

Solar Tail

Solar Tail

That is what is so amazing about the world  we live in, the knowledge, the new information, is just flowing in like crazy, in every field,  in medicine, in biology, in archeology, in all the ologies.  They say (they, i don’t know who exactly they are in this case, I saw one documentary on this on Discovery Channel and it’s a bit of a sensational claim, so I’d guess about the usual mix of semi-reputable scientists with people who are a little bit nuts) we will achieve singularity by 2045, sort of a worldwide machine mind, a borg like intelligence.

Leave aside, for the moment, the argument about whether or not that would be a good thing.

Every year, as we increase the speed at which we take in and process knowledge and  have faster and more powerful computers which are in direct touch with one another and have rudimentary thought patterns, the collective brain grows.  They will  correlate one set of data with another and show us things, like the solar systems tail, that we didn’t even know we didn’t know.

I don’t know if we will achieve, or even want to achieve, singularity.  But, damn, we are going to see some sights along the way.
