Forget Syria for a moment. Nothing’s going to happen for a week or so. Forget the horrible inequity in wealth distribution throughout the world. Forget about guns. Forget the hell out of Miley Cyrus. (although I thought this video was pretty funny) Forget about all that stuff.
Diana Nyad! She just swam 110 miles (that’s 177 kilometers) through shark infested ocean water. She started in Havana and landed in Key West. It took her 53 hours. I couldn’t walk that distance in 53 hours. Hell, I can’t even stay awake 53 hours. And, she’s 64 years old!

I’m sure that most people, like me, are impressed with her feat. She’s the 1st in the world to ever do it – sort of. An Australian woman swam the same route about 15 years ago, but Diana Nyad did it without a shark cage. As I first read about it, I thought ‘well, what difference does that make? Nyad had a support boat, divers to fend off sharks, an anti-jellyfish suit, stuff like that. They didn’t just walk into the sea in a bikini and start swimming.’ But the shark cage not only lets you concentrate on swimming without being afraid that a huge, vicious animal, on his home turf, is going to bite your legs off, it also produces a bit of a drawstream, rather in the way that you might drive along dangerously close behind a semi-trailer truck, if you are younger than you are smart, desperately broke and trying to stretch your gas mileage just as far as you can.
Oh, yeah, and the Australian woman was 22. Diana Nyad is 64 years old, as I believe I mentioned.
I’ve seen a few negative comments on the internet, talking about how she must be taking steroids, because she’s got large muscles and such. STFU, Assholes! Damn, some people will just bitch about anything. I don’t care if she was drinking steroids like they were Gator-Ade. It doesn’t matter to me if she’s done so many steroids she’s got a hairy chest – and a penis. She’s still amazing.
