Even When the Plan Falls Apart, It May Work Better Than No Plan at All

out of control

It’s something like this

Last night and this morning I spent a great deal of time and effort making up a seating plan and name tags for two groups of 7th graders who have been giving me all sorts of problems.  I figured this might impose some order and at least, by separating the real problem cases, lower the volume a bit.

Still had lots of time before the class, took the tram downtown but then walked from there, across the river – Becky, the vines are still green…autumn will come soon enough, there is a light sprinkling of yellow leaves on the ground, but I’m not in any hurry.

Got to school plenty early, rearranged the tables, laid out my name tags and waited…and waited…the bell rang and nobody was there.  So, I went and found the director.  They were on some theater trip.  So, I still had to wait for the 2nd group, but I was a bit miffed that my work was wasted.  The best laid schemes o’ mice and men gang aft agley.

Then another teacher came in and said that since another classes teacher wasn’t there, she was going to send that class in for an English lesson.  8th graders.  Nice bunch.  One kid looked like Harry Potter.  I think I stretched that joke a bit too far.  Much more respectful than my usual students, and I’ll probably never see them again.

The 2nd group of 7th graders did start on time, but I didn’t have the name tags laid out so when I started to do that they acted like I was being the most tyrannical teacher in the universe.  Still, their written assignments were way better than last week.  So, while the best laid  schemes o’ mice and men gang aft agley, they don’t gang as far agley as if there was no plan in the first place.
