Government vs. The People

The British Government has accused David Miranda of terrorism.  This is such an egregiously incorrect use of the word terrorism that it would be comical except it’s not because they are serious.

Terrorism means you’re terrorizing somebody, usually either by blowing stuff up or shooting off guns or maybe spreading poison gas around in a crowded Metro Station or something.  David Miranda didn’t do anything like that.

David Miranda and Glenn Greenwald – They’re like the opposite of terrorists

What happened is the last time he flew out of England they stopped him and searched him and took a bunch of papers he was carrying because they know he is Glenn Greenwald’s boyfriend and Glenn Greenwald is the journalist who was working together with Edward Snowden, the man both Barack Obama and whoever the current British Prime Minister is are scared shitless of.  (Don’t tell me I can’t  end a sentence with a preposition.  I’ll end a sentence with whatever the hell I want to.)  But even Edward Snowden is not a terrorist, not if the word means “somebody who commits acts of terrorism.”

So, when he  got back to Brazil (his native country) he sued the British government for return of the papers and now they are coming up with this terrorist nonsense as a way to refuse to give the papers back.  It’s really overkill.  If they don’t want to give the papers back, all they’ve got to say is “Whoops, we seem to have misplaced them, sorry about that,” and everybody would just forget about the whole thing.

It makes me wonder what information they are so terrified of being revealed.  Proof that they killed David Kelly, which all of us liberals suspected at the time?  Proof that they know perfectly well there were no WMDs in Iraq, which all of us liberals suspected at the time?  Proof that 9/11 was an inside job or, even worse from the British perspective, that the London bombings of 7/7/05 were a false flag operation?  Who knows.  The British government certainly isn’t going to tell us.

Of course, some people will say that the government has to be able to keep secrets, to protect national security, but that’s bullshit.  The only legitimate purpose of government is to do what’s right by its people.  Keep the roads repaired, keep the teachers paid so the schools  stay open, make sure there’s a few police and firefighters on duty, stuff like that.  If there’s anything they need to keep secret, you know it’s something beyond that – wars they are plotting or huge no-bid contracts going to politicians’ wealthy friends, for instance – and they probably shouldn’t be doing it.

A world where governments could not keep any secrets at all would be a far, far better world for everybody living in it.
