Excuses, Excuses

Of course, there are reasons why I am 5 days behind in writing blog posts.  Some might call them excuses but for myself, seeing nothing particularly evil about making excuses to myself, they are reasons.

For the last 3 days we have been putting together the March issue of Watson’s World News.  I guess really that’s the April issue but we come out the last Wednesday of every month.  It’s a little project we do to advertise our language school.  I would like for it to be a much bigger project but it’s rather like this blog.

If either my wife or I had a business mentality, that sales persona, we could probably make a much bigger deal out of it than it is.  I believe the quality is there.

Anyway, when we put the paper together, it consumes a whole weekend.  First, I have to choose the stories.  I like going to Ananova’s quirkies and then Reuters’ oddly enough, but I’m kind of tired of the stupid criminal stories.  Apparently, a lot of the guys who rob banks are stupid enough to ask one of the tellers for a date.  So, I go through the month and find, with luck, 8 or 9 stories which I feel like stealing.  Then, I round it out with a bit of Hollywood celebrity scandal and maybe something cool from the tech world and Bob’s your uncle, we have a paper.  There’s also a word of the month and a letter from the editor, which I have to write, but that doesn’t take too much effort once I have the idea.

So, there’s no one particular part of it that’s hard, but it’s time consuming and made much more difficult when you have two kids who both want to use the computer and a computer that keeps screwing up.  And it totally pushes my blog writing, to some extent even my Wonkette reading, right out of the frame.

Add to that, my wife decided that this would be a good time to finish renovating our bedroom.  Now, I have many fine qualities, but DIY skills are not even close to being among them.  No, my wife’s cousin is the handyman of the family, so he was here for a few days, and my mother-in-law.

It was hard enough to even think in English, much less get anything else written.
