Of course, now that my wife is working and I’m playing househusband but both our kids are in school, I have a lot of free time and I spend a lot of that free time getting high and watching TV.

Lately I’ve been really into watching Animal Planet, especially the monkey stuff.  (note to Animal Planet – the animal rescue shows don’t work for me , and you really just seem to have them non-stop.  Enough, already)

I watch Monkey City and Orangutan Island and they are totally cool shows because the main characters have personalities and play interesting and unpredictable roles, but they are not human.  They live in a world of extreme violence, danger, wild animals and sex.  There are battles for power, battles to the death.

The more I see of monkeys and apes, the more I wonder why creationists even bother denying the connection between us, or think it is a negative thing that this is another branch of our evolutionary family tree.  These are admirable creatures.  They stick up for each other, they help, they share.  They have a sense of honor.  They have tremendous courage, and strength.  Physical strength and strength of character.

So, I like the monkey shows because they are an adventure, an unscripted show in which anything can happen but without the propagandizing you get from watching a cop show or a spy thriller.  It is really, really reality TV.

I hate reality TV as a general rule, because there’s nothing real at all about a bunch of teenagers living in a house and drawing names out of a hat and performing silly tasks like in some weird team building exercise and then they vote on who has to leave.  Where outside of reality TV does anybody do that shit?
