School’s out! Today was Sam’s last day in 2nd grade and Isabel has one week to go in pre-school. We were both pretty impressed that he got almost all ones. One two in Czech, which is all about handwriting, and I really have no right to complain about that. Anyone who is reading this is fortunate that the internet was invented, because my longhand sucks. Many people find it downright illegible and even I, myself, have sometimes been unable to read later something I had written.
However, my wife and I reacted differently. She was effusive with her praise. I complained about the two because the way I see it, that’s my job as a parent. If the parents aren’t going to demand perfection, who is going to demand perfection? If a two is acceptable, why not a 3 or a 4? We aren’t raising Bart Simpson, here.
As I said, though, I’ve got no right to complain. In 2nd grade, I was a bright, intellectually curious student who loved to read and was the best reader in the class. But there were subjects I was less interested in, I didn’t always get along well with the other kids (that’s one area where it seems to me that Sam excels – he’s a real popular little kid) and I don’t know if I ever got a perfect report card.
In High School, there were classes I failed and classes I was kicked out of.
I’m looking forward to summer, though. Yesterday, we went down to Old Town Square at Sam’s request (he’d earned a reward) to watch Brazil v. Portugal on the big screen. It was a boring game, ending 0-0, but the kids both had a good time and there some Brazilian girls in the crowd who were worth looking at.
Brazilians are an exceptional and amazing bunch. They are the racial future of the human race, and the future looks good.
Yes, when did being ignorant and uneducated become a desirable trait in the US ? The Right Wing seems to take pride in not being Intellectuals, Elitists, Academics, etc. This does not speak well of our future over here….
