Reid Plays Angle

The NRA has endorsed Harry Reid in his bid to retain his senate seat from Nevada.

1st, it seems as if this virtually assures his re-election.  Despite the shrieking of the teabaggers, despite the “Showdown in Searchlight,” despite hundreds of negative caricatures, thousands of angry tweets and e-mails and millions upon millions of unspoken Republican death prayers, Harry Reid will coast to election in November.

The NRA, an organization the teabaggers revere, an organization that an inordinately high proportion of them are members of, has endorsed Democrat Harry Reid over one of their own.

Sharron Angle screwed up bad.  She had to tack to the right constantly and I’m sure it wasn’t easy, just to win the Republican primary.  Remember, she was running against a woman who thought that people should pay for their health care with chickens.  That’s what she had to outdo.  And she apparently accomplished that.

But, in so doing, her nutcase views were exposed to the general public, which includes both Democrats (wouldn’t be enough) and that great group of people in the middle who give non-commital answers when you ask them about politics and really would prefer to be left alone and the biggest influence on their political opinions is Jay Leno (definitely enough)

So, the NRA went ahead and endorsed Reid.

Maybe it also had to do with the 61 million dollars the state just spent to set up a public shooting range, out in the desert not far from Las Vegas.  Now, a lot of the comments I’ve been reading have pointed out that $61million is a lot of money for some bales of straw and paper targets out there in the desert.  But, hey, if the states going to build a shooting range, might as well make it nice, right?  Nice restaurant, rooms available, souvenir shop, casino, all of the stuff for which Las Vegas is famous.  Suddenly $61 mill is sounding like a much more humble figure.

I guess, even if it is corruption (which would require a quid pro quo, which is really hard to prove even when it’s bloody obvious, like here), it’s at least corruption that provided people with jobs.

This (and Kentucky) indicate to me that the Republicans are goint to take a pasting in the fall, the teabaggers are going to be held responsible for it, and the Republican party minus the teabaggers is just so much tepid water.
