It Could Have Been Worse

I am beat.  It has been a hard, hot day.  First off, getting out of the house before 7 a.m., which I haven’t had to do for awhile, and shlepping that big, ugly, blue plastic crate with the watermelon and cherries and all of the drinks and it was heavier than I thought it would be and got me some nasty looks on the Metro, you’d better believe.

Then, I got all set up, and nobody showed.  Not until about 10:30 and I was really getting worried.  Then a Korean couple arrived, Stepanka had arranged it for them (earlier, though, a Ukrainian woman had shown up and I was giving her the 3rd degree and trying to sign her up and she’d come in to pay for an entirely different course and had no bloody idea what I was talking about.)  Anyway, she said she would join the lessons, I sure hope she comes tomorrow, no payment yet, and that was my morning.

Passed out fliers, went to pay Jewel, it wasn’t as much as I’d thought, still had two and a half hours so I went home and had a shower because I was sweating like mad, resisted the impulse to smoke a joint and headed back to work.

The afternoon was much better, but it was hard work.  1st, a Kyrgyz mother and son, I hope she comes but I think she was more just setting up lessons for Zamir, they both could use it, for sure, she had a really cute baby, too, who was good most of the time.  So, she left and he stayed.  By that time Helena had arrived, not my Helena, Helena from Rostocky (Hi!), so I was dealing with one serious advanced student and one beginner, then an Iranian couple but he’s the only one who wants lessons (and the only one who paid today) then an older woman named Dana, her English was pretty good and I think she had a good time but she made no commitment, Jana who teaches English so wasn’t really looking for lessons at all.  Then all the teachers, plus Aga and Huggy (he seems to prefer to go by Tom now, but I was introduced to him as Huggy and so that’s how I think of him, but no Megan, who was sick.

About 6:30, everybody left except Zamir and time came to a standstill.  I like working with beginners, I think it’s the most important thing a teacher can do, but it’s hard.  Real hard.

So, I’m beat.
