Football Camp

We drove Sam up to football camp today.  I’m kind of bummed.  He was at his grandparents for a little over a week, home for one night, and today, hey, it’s football camp time.  I can’t complain too much, it’s all part of our summer and work plan, I can’t look after the kids in the morning and work, too, so we farm them out a bit.  Still.

I feel like he’s being influenced a little bit too much by people other than me.  He came home from Kotelsko dressed head to toe in camouflage and carrying a plastic M-16.  My wife knows that I don’t like military gear and toys but I doubt that she has conveyed that message to her parents.  It’s not that they are deliberately flouting my wishes, it’s just that the thought that war toys might be a bad influence on a 7 year old boy has probably never crossed their minds.

His football coach, Bedřich, who all the kids call Beda (pronounced Bedya, which cracks me up because the cartoon character Yogi Bear is Medya Bedya, i.e. Bedya the Bear) is a really shouty guy, pretty much what you expect a kid’s football coach to be, but he strikes me as way over the top sometimes.  Nonetheless, if I occasionally lose my temper it’s “Why are you always shouting at Sam?”

Anyway, we got him up there and turned him loose.  One thing we don’t have to worry about with Sam.  He’s not shy, he’s not afraid to be away from his parents, not at all.  We were there about two seconds and he was at a table with a bunch of kids, trading Pokemon cards, and he was right in the thick of the action.

On the way back, we saw signs to Rip hill (there should be a haček over that R, so it´s pronounce rzheep, but I don´t know how to do that on this keyboard)  Rip hill is the mythological founding point of the Czech nation.  Great grandfather Czech, the story goes, walked up the hill and looked around and said, this looks pretty good, all of my descendants will live here.  That’s it, that’s the whole story.

So, we’re going to check that out when we go to pick him up on Sunday.  I hope it’s a nice view.
