Now, Christine O’Donnell is all for chastity and would stop everybody from having sex and even masturbating if she could, unless of course they were married and doing it just to have babies, as the good Lord intended. We all know that God is her campaign manager, and she will put up with no evil. But she wasn’t always quite so doctrinaire.
She has admitted that she was a bit of a slut in college (O.K., the word she used was promiscuous, and as a general rule I’ve got nothing whatsoever against college girls being promiscuous, in fact I have been known to encourage the behavior. Also, as a male who is

supportive of the feminist cause, I know I probably shouldn’t be using a word like slut, but we’re talking about Christine O’Donnell, so what the fuck) and even dabbled in witchcraft, so at one point in her life she wasn’t such a bible thumping hard ass. Possibly even had some imagination and curiousity.
Today’s Bill Maher bombshell is that she considered becoming a Hare Krishna, but couldn’t do without meat. Actually, I understand her. I, too, would probably be a Hare Krishna, except for the no meat thingie, and having to shave your head and wear an orange dress and walk around the streets all day with a beatific (i.e. stupid) look on your face and the awful, repetitive music which is mostly awful because it’s repetitve, and the trying to sell their stupid book and cadge money from strangers all the time. That and no real pressing need to find religious enlightenment.
Just because we don’t understand the meaning of life, the universe and everything is no reason to turn to Buddhism, or Christianity, or any other religion. There is science, there is philosophy, and there is, ultimately, admitting that the universe is fucking huge and we are no more going to figure it out than a fish is going to figure out what is outside of the ocean.
Still, it doesn’t hurt to experiment. If Christine O’Donnell had gotten into witchcraft, or Hare Krishna, she might not be running for the Senate today as a representative of the Christian nutcase wing of the Republican party. But I’ll bet she’d be a better person.
