Solar Panels are Token Gesture

Barack Obama is going to put solar panels on the roof of the White House.  Like Michelle’s vegetable garden, I think it’s a nice gesture.  I thought it was a nice gesture when Jimmy Carter first put them up and then when Ronald Reagan had them taken down, well, that told us something about the man, certainly.

But it’s token.  It’s only a gesture.  Symbolic.  Not substantial.

The Great Plains; The Saudi Arabia of Wind

How about putting solar panels on all public buildings?  How about making urban gardening a course at every school, with enough to provide each neighborhood with garden fresh vegetables?  How about a high speed rail system and promoting electric cars, how about better public transit?  How about turning Kansas and Nebraska into giant windfarms?

At a time of massive unemployment, at a time when the environment is falling apart in front of our eyes, at a time, like all other times, in which the future of the human race is to be decided, it seems to me that bold solutions are called for.

Here’s one suggestion, for what it’s worth.  100% recycling.  You see plenty of people willing to take that job at low pay, you see them rummaging through the rubbish, not just looking for a meal, but sorting out anything they can either use or sell and make money on.  Why not put them in a modern, clean recycling facility and give them minimum wage.  Solves several problems at once, not the least of which is garbage piling up, which is one thing I really don’t like about living in a city.  Any city.

Also, it would save everybody from having to separate out paper and plastic and glass and white glass, whatever that means.  That would all be d

one by professionals.  So, I do have a selfish self-interest in this proposal.

Now, lot’s of rubbish, when you get down to the nitty-gritty, can be composted and made into fertilizer and fuel.  Other odd bits are saleable goods here and there, and there is the production of raw materials, e.g. recycled paper, plastics, metals, glass.  Eventually, each recycling center could be self-supporting, and a net tax gain.

Anyway, that’s one idea.

I agree. It would make sense to install solar panels on all roofs and anywhere else they could be effective. Neighborhood community gardens should be started everywhere, especially in inner city areas…guarded and cared for by those in the neighborhood. So much could be done but as I heard one man say on a documentary about placing toilets throughout India…..no one will do anything unless they can make money doing it……
