The Power of the Press

It´s not so much which side of an issue the press takes.  It´s whether they decide to address an issue at all.  The surest way to kill an idea, a project, a movement is quite simply to pay it no mind.  If you are the one setting the agenda, it will wither and die.

So, politics in America tends to revolve around a few topics.  Guns, gays, abortion and immigration.  No offense to my gay, female and Mexican friends but these are a collection of issues I don´t spend a lot of time worrying about.  I can´t get upset about gays not

Alaskans, Please vote for Scott McAdams. He's not crazy.

being allowed to join the military.  How many gay people are chomping at the bit to go to the middle east and kill people?  (Now, THAT’S something I object to.)  Sure, I’m for abortion rights – up to a point.  (Q.  At what point, according to the Jewish religion, is a fetus considered viable?  A.  After he’s graduated from medical school….old joke)  But it’s not my issue.  As to immigration, my views are not likely to be considered in a debate over American politics (one world, baby, let everybody go wherever they want) so there’s not much point discussing that.

The issues I’d really like to see discussed (recycling, better public transportation, alternative energy, reopening the 9/11 investigation, legalizing marijuana) get no airplay at all.  No politician bothers taking a stand on them because nobody is talking about them.  That’s because the media has decided that they don’t want these things.  If they don’t talk about them, nobody will.

In Alaska, the Senate race is between Joe Miller, raving lunatic who thinks the U.S. could learn a thing or two from the former East Germany about border control, says social security is unconstitutional and has his goons handcuff reporters who dare to ask him questions, and Scott McAdams, non-controversial Democrat.  Those are the two names that are on the ballot.

However, if you get your news from Huffpo, or any of the major American TV networks, you might not know that.  They’ve been billing it as a race between Joe Miller and write-in candidate Lisa Murkowski.  I’d never even seen a picture of Scott McAdams until a couple of days ago.  They’ve tried to bury Scott McAdams by ignoring him.  Fuckers.

It’s not quite as bad as you suggest. The Anchorage Daily News http://www.adn.com/ covers Miller quite exhausively. Of course they are part of the McClatchy chain.
