Last night in Paducah, Kentucky, American politics sank to a new low. In view of American politics over the last decade, that is saying quite a lot.
It happened at a campaign rally for Rand Paul, son of Ron Paul, tea party favorite and Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. Despite Paul’s extreme and bizarre positions on the issues (wouldn’t have voted for 1964 Civil Rights Act, wants to eliminate the income tax and replace it with a national sales tax, wants to build an underground electronic fence along the Mexican border)he is actually leading in the polls.
A woman, Lauren Valle, who is with the Moveon organization, planned to stage a little protest. A bit of street theater. She had a letter to deliver to Paul, naming him employee of the month for Republicorp. As far as political theater goes, it wasn’t the greatest plan. We liberals think it’s a big deal that Republicans are all in the pockets of the large corporations. The people who are planning on voting for Paul couldn’t care less. As long as you love Jesus and Guns, and hate taxes and liberals, they won’t question your ethics too deeply.
Anyway, she didn’t get to deliver the letter. Two of Paul’s campaign workers grabbed her, threw her to the ground, and one of them stepped on her head. She wasn’t seriously injured, thank goodness.
Still, it shows that teabaggers are not nice people, they are not just regular folks who see things a little differently than the rest of us, they are not civilized, respectable human beings. They are violent, nasty, mean, brutal cretins who, if they take power, will rule by threat and intimidation.
Because they seriously believe that that is O.K.
