Some people sleep 10 hours a day, some people get by on 4 or 5. If we´re tallying things up, if we´re keeping score, we might be tempted to think that those who sleep less get more hours of consciousness packed into each day, get more things done, in a sense even live longer. I´m not really sure that´s true.
Of course, maybe they are also more prone to early heart attacks from stress. I don´t know, I´m not citing any studies here, just wild speculation. Y ‘ all can add your two cents in the comments.
Myself, I can usually get by on about 6 hours a night. When I was 20 or so, I could get by on 4 a night for fairly long stretches and that´s
factoring in rather large quantities of hard alcohol. I don´t drink at all now and I still need more sleep. It´s not just the alcohol that messes you up. It´s the passage of time. I´m guessing that when I´m 90 (touch wood) I’ll be a 10 hour a day sleeper. In a rocking chair, on a front porch, facing a lake would be nice. With a couple of flop eared beagles snoring at my feet.
Anyway, the fact that I sleep less than the international average definitely does not mean that I get more done. I think time spent in front of the TV should only count as being half awake and I do way more than my fair share of that.
As you may have guessed, this blog came about because I didn’t really have a good idea for a blog. If Bristol Palin wins on Dancing With the Stars today, I might write about that tomorrow.
And, oh yeah, today was the 47th anniversary of John Kennedy’s assassination. I guess I could have written about that. Interesting fact: Surveys have shown that that “everybody remembers where they were when it happened” thing is not entirely accurate. True enough, everybody thinks they do (everybody over 50 – other generations have similar moments, such as 9/11). But a study was done once where they interviewed people and asked them where they were and then interviewed other people who they said they were with and then those people had entirely different memories so somebody had to be mistaken. That might have been a better blog topic but screw it, I’m off to bed.
