Michael Vick says he would like to have a dog as a pet. He says he thinks that would help with his redemption, that that would be an important part of his healing process. You remember Michael Vick. He’s the NFL star who had a dog fighting business on the side. He raised dogs to be mean and vicious, organized fights and made a nice little side living as people bet on the outcome. Dogs who lost, but weren’t outright killed in the combat, he would take care of.
And when I say take care of, I mean he would put them in a bathtub, run the water for a bit, and then throw in a toaster or some other electrical appliance. For the laughs, of course. There are better ways to euthanize an injured animal, but none quite so entertaining.
Anyway, he served his jail sentence and now spends a lot of time going around to schools talking to kids about how they should be nice to animals. Which is a lot like Bristol Palin telling teenagers they shouldn’t have sex. And probably has about the same success rate.
Anyway, he has a bright future still ahead of him in the NFL and millions of dollars. For the moment, however, he’s not allowed to own a dog. That restriction will be lifted once his parole ends. I don’t think it should. I think he should be banned from owning animals for life.
It’s not a big restriction. Not a terrible violation of his civil rights. I don’t particularly care about his redemption. He can go to his grave being a cruel, nasty man who hates animals and has sadistic urges toward them, for all I care. Just so long as he’s not allowed anywhere near them.
Because it’s not about Michael Vick. It’s about the dogs.
