Anna Chapman
Current events are always full of potential movie scripts. There are two movies I would really, really like to see made from today’s headlines. As I have mentioned in this space before, I think “The Wikileaks Saga” could be the next People v. Larry Flynt. I’m not sure if that should be a Michael Moore project or if Oliver Stone or maybe Ron Howard should take the lead. Moore would be the more historically accurate, but Stone or Howard might make a more personally compelling film.
Anyway, you make a film about it, Julian Assange and, in a sympathetic supporting role, Bradley Manning (or maybe he deserves his own film but I hate prison films) would be the heroes of the story. You can’t make the government the hero. There’s no rebel story there, there’s no underdog factor.
The other film is “The Spy Next Door,” the Anna Chapman story. You may remember Anna Chapman. She is a Russian girl, born Anna Vasil’yevna Kushchyenko, who was arrested along with 9 others in June in New York, on charges of spying for Russia. They all pleaded guilty and were sent back to Russia in a prisoner exchange. But she got all the press because she is young, pretty and glamorous. Actually, the spying charges were overrated. The way I understand, she agreed to deliver somebody a fake passport. That’s a minor transgression and an immigration issue, but not necessarily spying.
More Anna Chapman
For the film, of course, you either make her out to be a superspy, or add a love interest, or both. I vote for both.
Anyway, she’s back in the news again because her ex-boyfriend sold some nude photos of her to Playboy. Skinny (I think maybe Keira Knightley could play her), but with a lovely face. Anyway, worth a film. And a good excuse to write this blatantly sexist column (because it’s news, you know) and post nude, sort of, photos of Anna Chapman.
