Watson’s World News

Once a month, we (my wife and I) put out a newspaper called Watson’s World News.  It’s an advertisement for our school, a free lesson plan for anyone who is teaching English as a foreign language, and practice material for students.  You can check it out at http://www.watsonenglish.cz  We stopped the print edition about 2 months ago, to save money, and now just produce it online.  There’s one big flaw with that.  I get lazy.  The deadline was today.  We’ll probably finish it tomorrow, but maybe not until Friday.

Anyway, I try to choose articles which will give people something to talk about, so it’s not great journalism.  But it’s a lot of fun, and I learn a lot.  This month, our lead story will be that researchers think they may have found the remains of Amelia Earheart.  Again.  Then

The Proud Fathers

there is a story about people from Iran seeking asylum in Europe because they are gay, and a rather intrusive test they have to go through to prove it  (basically, they give you a copy of Hustler.  If you pop a woody, no asylum for you).  Next, there are stories about a guy in Germany who got busted for having a marijuana Christmas tree, which I see as totally wrong (that he got busted, not that he had the tree), Nicole Richie’s wedding, complete with elephant, a cobbler in England who hypnotized his staff into thinking they were warm rather than actually heating the place and Richard Branson wearing a dress.  Again.  Next we have a story about a restaurant in China with robot waiters.  Robots are a recurring theme.  I think someday they will take over the world.

Elton John has a new baby.   This article raises more questions than it answers, but we do our best with the information available.  Natalie Portman is engaged.  So is Reese Witherspoon, but I had to make some choices.  I love Reese, but I think Portman is the more internationally recognized star.  Hundreds of people were trapped overnight on the subway in the great New York blizzard.  I don’t think that’s a very earth shaking story, but it beat out Bus Driver Runs over Snowman.  Then, teen idol Miley Cyrus caught smoking a bong, 3 cute animal stories, a crossword puzzle, a recipe, the horoscope and a couple of feature columns and Bob’s Your Uncle, another edition done.

We’ll have it online in a day or two.
