An Open Letter to Mark Zuckerberg

Dear Mr. Zuckerberg,

I am one of your millions and millions of Facebook users.  I must confess I rather like it,  or I wouldn’t be using it.  I also freely admit that you are a smarter man than I am.  You created Facebook.  I can barely find time any more to read a book.  Thirdly, I don’t even know how to properly use your site, so some of what I say may be steeped in ignorance.  Doesn’t matter.  That’s never stopped me from expressing an opinion before.

I’ve got some advice on how to manage your site.  Now, I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the new profile format.  I don’t really care about that, that’s just format.  If I come home one day and my wife has moved the furniture around, I’m not too bothered.  As long as it’s all still there, I don’t care too much how it’s arranged.

No, my advice is more general, philosophical.  In a nutshell, let it go.  Back off.  Cut some slack.  Like a baby bird has to be kicked out of the nest before it will fly, like a child doesn’t become an adult until it leaves home, like Australia became a great nation once they gave the convicts a bit of land and freedom, so it is time for Facebook to move beyond it’s nascent stage and become all that it can be.

I’m not saying it should be user owned, although come to think of it, that’s an interesting idea.  I’m saying let it be user managed.  An online democracy.  You have millions and millions of people, all of them pulling in different directions but quite a few of them with interesting ideas and great talents.  Why try to control it?

When you are riding the wave, you do not try to control the wave.
