World famous orange crybaby John Boehner is going into a battle he can’t win. The House of Representatives, instead of approving Obama’s budget, is sending it back to the President, with a lot of cuts: Planned Parenthood, the Environmental Protection Agency (they don’t want them regulating greenhouse gasses), the arts and a few other things.
Obama has said he will veto the bill. There is, therefore, an impasse. Now, knowing that Obama has caved on so many things in the past, I’m not sure why I’m optimistic about the outcome of this battle, but I am. A veto is a veto. If the Republicans use that to shut down the government, it will be the end of John Boehner’s career just as sure as it was the end of Newt Gingrich’s when he tried the same stunt with Clinton. Old people get pissed off when their Social Security checks are late, and without old people, the Republicans really don’t have much.
Also, the things they are planning to cut are so ridiculous. Cuts to (or the elimination of) Planned Parenthood is just an anti-abortion move and I think most people understand that. The money saved is negligible. I’m not as worried about Public Broadcasting or the arts as a lot of liberals -the arts will survive because they’re not about money at all – but again, these are petty cuts which won’t even come close to solving the problem. As for the EPA, what the Republicans are suggesting is that industry should be allowed to pollute just as much as they want. Really, really a bad idea.
I have some suggestions for cuts that might actually make a difference, which I offer to Speaker Boehner for free, out of the goodness of my heart:
1. Legalize Pot. You save a bundle on policing costs and free up the police to combat more serious crimes, and you save a bundle on incarcerating people who are no threat to society whatsoever, you save a bit on all of the government anti-drug propaganda, and you open up a new source of taxation. Major win.
2. Cut the military in half. The U.S. spends as much on its military as all other countries in the world combined, and there is no immediate threat to justify it. The military budget is half of the total federal budget. Huge bucks. That would solve the problem right there.
3. If you want to ax some unnecessary government agencies, how about starting with the CIA. They have existed since the Eisenhower administration, and the amount of good they have done for the U.S. and the world is precisely 0. Remember in “Meet the Fockers” when Dustin Hoffman challenged Robert DeNiro to name one CIA success? The writers had DeNiro remain silent. That’s because there was nothing he could have said which would have made any sense at all. Iran? Fail. Cuba? Fail. Chile? Fail. Viet Nam? Fail. They are useless, they are worse than useless and they should be eliminated. You want intelligence? Start actually paying attention to what is happening in the world.

Very good !! I agree. I would add that the super rich millionaires and Billionaires should be taxed more, and all income levels should pay Social Security tax. Actually, corporations and individuals should never be allowed to profit such exorbitant amounts in the first place as it is usually gained at the expense and pain of the poor. Income equality with some room for personal profit is needed worldwide.
Yup. The way I see it, socialism for the poor, free market capitalism for the rich. Nobody should starve or go homeless, but as long as the basics are guaranteed, let people get as rich as they can.
