Michael Moore is Right

Michael Moore gave a big speech in Madison, Wisconsin, the other day.  He was speaking to the protesters there, and he made a really good point that not a lot of other people have been making.

His point was that this whole “America is broke” thing is bullshit.  There’s plenty of money in America.  There are just far, far too many people who don’t have any of it.

The same thing applies to the world, and the human race, at large.  We live on a wealthy planet.  If the world were organized slightly differently, everybody in the world could be living in comfortable, paid up homes, eating three square meals a day, taking 2 month vacations every year, going to nice schools, and getting immediate health care whenever they needed it.  Some countries are pretty close to this already.  Others have a few gazillionaires who run everything, shitloads of weapons, or both.

The world is wealthy.  People are starving to death on a planet that is practically made out of food.  3/4ths of the surface is covered by ocean, and the ocean is just crawling with fish.  The land is covered with grass, and that’s all the cows and sheep need and we get to eat the cows and sheep.  Every apple tree produces enough fruit to fill a truck and any orange tree produces more screwdrivers than a normal person could drink in a lifetime.  Anybody who has ever walked down a row of vegetables, stooped down and inching forward, knows that the amount of food produced in a small area is somewhere near infinite.

There are enough materials: stone, brick, concrete, steel, plastic, glass, to build homes for all, hospitals, schools, basically every structure we could possibly need.   ( I left out wood.  I like wood, it’s beautiful and feels like home, but we need to be planting more trees, not cutting them down)

Clean, fresh water could easily be delivered to every corner of the world.  It’s a question of having enough purification plants and a whole lot of PVC piping.  It could be done for less than the U.S. spends on defense in a year.  3 or 4 of the world’s top billionaires could probably spring for the whole thing, and have plenty of walking around cash left over.

It’s a wealthy world.  It is a bizarre and shameful thing that poverty is still allowed to persist.
