May 21st, 2011 is thought by some to be the day that Jesus will come down and draw the righteous on up into heaven. Anybody still here and still alive after that date is bound to burn, like a marshmallow in the presence of a flame thrower, in the flames of hell forever. I am really looking forward to May 22nd, just to leave a few snarky, gloating comments on fundie threads.
But today is also a pretty big day for teabaggers and all those opposed to Barack Obama. Late in February, a call was put out, a call to protest Obama’s policies by pulling cars, vans, motorcycles and trucks over to the side of the road, because Sarah Palin had called Obama’s policies “the road to ruin.”
Now, I do have a confession and a disclaimer. At the time I wrote that story, I wrote as if the protest idea had come from the mind of Sarah Palin herself, because I was under that impression. But as I began to write this, I read back. It was actually written up by a pro-Sarah Palin website (they opened their article with that “road to ruin” line) called Stand Up, America. So, although she is not as directly implicated as I erroneously stated, it’s still a pro-Sarah Palin project.
Anyway, it was suggested, it was widely ridiculed, and it was never discussed again. However, today is the big day. Will millions of people nationwide pull their campers over to the side of the road, sit there for an hour making angry tweets and facebook comments, honking their horns at disinterested passers-by? Thousands? Hundreds? Tens? Will Sarah Palin be among them?
Actually, I feel some sympathy for the organizers. I’ve been to plenty of left wing protest rallies where thousands are called for and 5 or 6 people show up. You stand around being embarrassed for awhile and then go home.
That’s what will happen today. If anything happens at all.
