Serious?
Nikki Haley and Meghan McCain think he is. Karl Rove and Eric Cantor think he’s not. It’s a good question.
I don’t think he seriously believes that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. He may not be an intellectual heavyweight, but he’s not that stupid. Only completely retarded people, who are also delusional , believe that. Still, that’s his one issue, and he’s hammering away at it like John Henry against the steam engine. Sarah Palin has criticized the media for saying that Trump has only one issue just because Trump only has one issue, but that just proves what an idiot Sarah Palin is and has nothing to do with Trump.
But, just because I think he’s flat out saying he believes something he doesn’t believe, doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s serious about his candidacy. Look at Scott Brown. The teabaggers loved him, the teabaggers got him elected, and then he turned out not to be a total teabagger. Look at all the Republicans in Congress who ran on a jobs creation platform. Look, in fact, at pretty much any politician ever.
On the other hand, there is the fact that he has donated to Democratic candidates and supported Democratic causes in the past, and is now running as an extreme right wing (we should just take their damned oil) Republican. This is somewhat bizarre, but not hard to explain. When you’ve got billions of dollars, it comes in handy to have friends on both sides of the aisle and, in any event, contributions can be written off.
I see a few possible explanations for his candidacy. It could be, as many serious pundits believe, that he’s just doing it for the publicity, to boost ratings for his TV show(s). If so, it’s working.
It is also possible that he is a false flag candidate, a red herring with a bad hairpiece, running just to screw things up for the Republicans. If so, then the follow up question is: is this his own idea, or is someone else, like Obama or the DNC, behind it? If the former, then he’s not only more of an altruist then I would have believed, but he’s a pretty smart guy, which would also be surprising. If the latter, then the Democrats are much more devious and willing to fight dirty than I would have suspected. I just wish they would put those qualities to work in getting some Democratic style legislation passed.
It’s also possible that it started off as a publicity stunt but, now that he sees himself ahead in the polls, he’s decided to go for it. It’s the presidency of the United States. That is a hell of a tempting target, especially for a narcissist.
