The dog torturer’s dad (in 1998, 17 year old David Huckabee and a friend, 19, were fired from their jobs at a boy scout camp for killing a stray dog. Accounts differ, but some of them are pretty horrific) is out of the race. I’m glad of that.

I do not want a fundamentalist Christian nutcase to be the leader of the free world. and that’s basically what Mike Huckabee is. He wants creationism taught in public schools. He wants American science students, who will some day have to compete in an international market, to be taught that evolution is only a theory, just like the book of Genesis in the Bible is a theory, and you can choose whichever one you like.
Which is nonsense. You can choose what you want to eat for dinner, you can choose what clothes you put on in the morning, but you cannot choose one version of history, or one version of science. What happened, happened. Evolution is not a theory. Fossil evidence bears it out, and now we’re capable of tracing it through DNA.
As to the version of creation in Genesis, even most Christians will admit that it’s a myth, a metaphor, a useful bit of poetic license. It’s only the crazy Christians who actually want it taught in High School science classes. But those crazy Christians are a dominant force in today’s Republican party, and they may well have given Huckabee the nomination.
And despite his insane beliefs, he might have won. He’s crazy, but not stupid. When he speaks, he comes across as a reasonable, likeable guy.
So, I’m glad he’s out of the race. The odds of Obama’s getting a 2nd term have just gone up.
