Evil Republican of the Week

It’s a crowded field this week, but cranky old racist John McCain wins it hands down.  The Senator from Arizona,  the senile old fool who launched Sarah Palin’s national career, blamed the recent wildfires in Arizona, which have left 10,000 people temporarily homeless, on the Mexicans.

Whatever you think of Barack Obama, things could have been much, much worse

He said he had “substantial evidence that some of these fires have been caused by people who have crossed our border illegally. The answer to that part of the problem is to get a secure border.”  (Law enforcement officials have determined that the fires were human caused, but whether accidentally or on purpose they don’t know, and they don’t have any suspects.)

It seems that old John’s information comes from other old racists who basically just pulled it out of their asses.  It’s an area close to the border, so it seemed a natural.  These illegal immigrants, you know, they light fires at night.  You know who else might have campfires at night in such an area?  Campers.  Some of whom are white.

Anyway, he’s talking about an event which has been tragic for thousands of people and instead of saying “I can’t make any comment on that until the proper authorities have investigated,” or “right now, our thoughts and prayers are with those people who have lost their homes,” little Johnny jumps  up and waves his hand in the air and says : “The Mexicans did it!  Mexicans start fires!  That’s what I heard!”

It’s quite similar to Nero saying “The Christians burned Rome!” or superstitious medieval Europeans, frightened by the ubiquitous and unstoppable Black Death, saying “The Jews poisoned the wells!”  It’s scapegoating.  Scapegoating is worse than just lying, because it’s lying which you know will bring down hate on the group of people you have scapegoated.

It is despicable.  It is unforgivable.  Senator McCain, you are the evillest Republican of the week.
