The Beauty of a Rainy Day

Well, we knew as soon as we woke up that it was not going to be a beach day.  And we went to the local indoor swimming pool/weak excuse for a water park yesterday.  It was fun but, really, only good for a couple of hours.  No water slide is interesting

Kolobrzeg. Both o's are long, the l is pronounced like a w, and the brzeg sounds like someone vomiting

indefinitely.

So, we decided to visit the nearby metropolis of Kolobrzeg, which I couldn’t pronounce if there was a prize offered, so I kept calling it koloběžka (which means scooter in Czech) and the kids thought that was pretty funny.  The plan was to wander around, see some sights, and stop for a breakfast of waffles, which is a local delicacy.  Topped with mounds of whipped cream and fruit.

I learned, while researching the place on the internet, that the region we are in is Pomerania, where Pomeranian dogs come from.  I hadn’t realized that.  You wouldn’t know it.  Haven’t really noticed any one dominant breed here.  Lots of cats, in fact.

It was, for the most part, a pleasant morning.  Polish people seem to be friendly enough, the shopkeepers smile and say thank you, which is a nice change from Prague.  We stopped to buy some fruit and the lady gave Sam and Isabel an extra plum apiece, “for luck”

By the time we got to the beach (even kitschier than Ustronie Morskie, actually) it had stopped raining and we even saw a couple of people swimming, but some people are nuts.  Sam took off his shoes, rolled up his pantlegs and then badly  misjudged a wave.  He had to ride back in his underwear covered up  with a sweater.  I thought it was funny.  Helena was not so amused.

After we got back to Ustronie Morskie, it started raining again so it was a shut-in afternoon, playing cards with  the kids.  Now, that may sound like a ruined vacation but to me, it was the best part.  Isabel lets everybody see her cards, Sam is hyper competitive, and everybody laughed and had a good time.  It beat the hell out of going places and seeing things.

By the evening, the rain had let up a bit and we had a lovely walk along the beach.  And I finally got my waffle.
