I’ve gone through a lot of changes of opinion since Madonna first came onto the pop scene, almost 30 years ago. From dismissive contempt to grudging admiration to actual fandom, and then back and forth a few times. She’s done some songs I liked, some I didn’t. She’s supported
some good causes, and stood up to authority in ways most other celebrities never would.
So, I’m more of a fan than a detractor and, when I say that, I’m talking about her as a person as well as her as a pop star. But I think she’s stepped over the line with this hydrangea thing.
In fairness, the initial incident was no big deal. A fan gave her a bunch of hydrangeas. She didn’t gush over them and put them in a vase but put them under the table and once he was gone, she turned to the others present and said “I loathe hydrangeas. He apparently doesn’t know that.” She did say thank you when she was given the flowers, she didn’t spit in the guy’s face or anything like that, but all the entertainment and gossip sites jumped on the incident like she’d done the worst thing in the world.
Up to that point, I’m on Madonna’s side. Then, as a response, she produced this:

And, you know what? I just changed my mind, in the course of writing this. (that happens, sometimes) I was going to blog about how there are a lot more important things to hate, like teabaggers, religious fanatics, pollution, war, poverty, bad drivers and dog poop in the grass, and how Madonna should just get over herself and apologize.
But the video was pretty funny, and she doesn’t really need to apologize to anybody for anything because she didn’t do anything all that bad, she just got caught on tape making a less than totally gracious comment which is not too surprising, she’s not Betty White and she’s not under contract to Disney like Miley Cyrus. She’s Madonna.
She can hate hydrangeas if she likes. I’m still a fan.
