I just saw a headline over at Huffpo that disturbed me. Romney Trails Rival Despite Front Runner Status.
Not Really The Frontrunner
What manner of fresh bullshit is this? If you trail, then you are not the front runner. That’s what trailing means. That you are behind them on the trail. You are the second husky on the sled team, sniffing the leader’s butt.
But, the press has decided that Romney is the front runner, that’s their story and they’re sticking to it, facts be damned.
It’s sort of like the way they managed to ignore the Occupy Wall St. protests for about the first two or three weeks of their existence, until everybody’d heard of them through facebook and twitter. Even now, they continually underreport them and continually refer to hundreds of protesters, when the pictures clearly show thousands.
It reminds me of the time Arianna Huffington , back in about 2006 or so, had a big meeting coming up with Nancy Pelosi and so she decided to pretend to be democratic (note small d) and ask her readers what question she should ask. Well, she got a flood of responses. The comments were pouring in by the thousands. Well over 50% were demanding impeachment. Some more diplomatically than others. (I confess, I was one of the others) A handful wrote in about some slaughter of wild horses that was happening in California or someplace, and a smattering on lots of other issues, but there was clearly a consensus.
She then wrote something along the lines of “having reviewed your responses, it’s clear that you want me to ask some puffpiece fluff question like ‘why is your job so hard’ and that’s what she went ahead and did.
Basically, these people just go ahead and write whatever they damn please. It has nothing to do with the facts, or any honest attempt to analyze those facts. If they want to call Romney the front-runner, they will continue to call him the front-runner, in the hope that he will eventually become one.
However, that whole business about believing it and it will eventually come true, fake it till you make it, power of suggestion, power of positive thinking, etc…has its limits. You can’t actually alter reality just on your little old say-so.
Anyway, there was one minor story today which I think deserves more attention, just because I think it was awesomely cool. First couple to have sex while skydiving! Well, maybe not the very first, who knows, but the first to get the whole thing on film. That’s amazing. It’s not something I’d do (parachuting, that is) but I admire those who do it, and the fact that they’re making it like eagles and putting it up on the internet makes them cultural heroes, in my eyes.
