My New Year’s Resolution

This year, in a desperate attempt to actually fulfill my New Year’s Resolutions for a change, I’ve decided to tr to trim it down to just one.  Forget losing weight.  That one generally goes out the window at some time on January 1st.  It’s still the holiday season.  There is still chocolate in the

Yup, that's me

house.

So, this year I will have just one resolution, and I can boil it down to one word.  Write.  I write this blog every day, to be sure.  It keeps me writing, and it keeps a running record of my opinions on everything.  I suppose that 2nd thing could be a bad thing or a good thing.  But, I enjoy writing it.  Some people throw things at their television.  I blog, because I prefer to live under the illusion that one person’s opinion can make a difference.

But that’s just the start of it.  I write a lot of poetry, of course.  I resolve to write even more, to put the stuff that’s not online online (you should check it out), and to collate the stuff that is online into book form and make it available for sale.  Soon, I hope to have “Willie’s Silly Animal Poems” available in book form, and I think kids will like it.  Might change the title, though.  I would call that a first quarter resolution.

I suppose I should try and write a novel, since that’s what people actually like to read.  I know people who do it for NaNoWriMo but I’ve never done that.  I guess I’m a bit afraid of it.  It’s totally different than writing poetry.  You have to come up with compelling characters, and for all my 57 years of studying human nature, I’m not sure  I sufficiently understand what makes some characters compelling and some not.  Also, when I try to write dialogue, it comes across sounding really stilted.  Or, maybe I just think it does.
So, it won’t be easy, but that’s my resolution.  Wish me luck.

Reminds me of that song, “Sing a Song,” the lyrics for which went, “Don’t worry if it’s not good enough / for anyone else to hear / just sing, song a song”.

    Happy New Year…
