You all remember Jimmy O’Keefe, the guy who thinks he is the right wing answer to Michael Moore, except he edits his films in a totally dishonest way and keeps getting caught at his sting operations. He’s no Michael Moore. He’s not even Sascha Baron Cohen. Anyway, up in New
Hampshire he got busted trying to use a dead man’s name to vote just to prove it could be done. But it couldn’t. Because New Hampshire is a small place, and somebody recognized the dead man’s name. Somebody, like his wife – who was the election clerk.
Now, New Hampshire officials want to throw little Jimmy into the slammer and I wouldn’t be terribly sorry to see it happen, because he’s such a prick. But, I doubt if he’ll actually get jail time (Republicans seldom do). Also, I think you have to take intent into account. However misguided his actions, he wasn’t trying to steal the election. Although he failed miserably, and pathetically, he was trying to prove a political point. So, it’s kind of a free speech issue, and we have to allow free speech even for idiots.
On the specific issue, Democrats and Republicans have lined up on opposite sides, but it’s a tempest in a teapot. Republicans want to make everybody show photo ID to vote, and Democrats are screaming that that will limit their voters. Not that much. The number of people who don’t have photo ID is really, really small and you can get one if you need one.
Take my mother, for example. She grew up in New York City and never learned to drive as long as she lived (she also never learned how to send e-mail). But she had an Iowa driver’s license – with big letters stamped sideways across it that said “Not Valid for Driving.” I always thought that was pretty funny.
