I will write about the results of the South Carolina primary in a day or two…in a nutshell, I think it’s hysterical, and has all but guaranteed Obama a second term.
As to Joe Paterno, all I really have to say is RIP and condolences to his family. I’m not really that much of a football fan that I have a dog in this fight, but my take on the whole scandal is that he wasn’t the one who fucked those little boys up the butt. When it was reported to him, he reported it higher up. Yeah, the higher ups did nothing and maybe Paterno should have been more aggressive about pushing the case but still, he was not the villain of the story.
No, today I just want to talk about my weekend, which was pretty beautiful. As we drove north from Prague, snow was falling and it fell for the whole two hour drive. By the time we got to Kotelsko, we were in a winter wonderland. The ground was a solid sea, an infinite carpet of white, and all of the trees and bushes, roofs, fenceposts and random roadsides were complementarily adorned.
We went out for dinner to celebrate my niece’s (wife’s sister’s daughter) 3rd birthday (coincidentally, I have a grand niece and nephew – yeah, twins – who also had their 3rd birthday today, but that’s in the States and actually, I’ve never even met them yet).
Anyway, it was fortunate that we were the only party in the room. They didn’t have a dětsky koutek (kid’s play area) but that didn’t matter because the kids just ran around and went crazy. If there had been any other patrons in the restaurant, they would have been pissed off.
This morning the kids built a fort, threw snowballs and I dragged them around on sleds for a bit. Then Helena and I went for a nice, long walk. The snowing had stopped, except for the occasional fluffings blown from the trees.
That was quite possibly the only snow I’ll see this winter as we still haven’t had any in Prague that’s actually stuck to the ground for more than half an hour. So, this weekend was a little vacation, a moment in an alternate reality, a much needed break from the routine. But it was enough. I’m glad to be home, inside, and warm.
