Everybody’s Gotta Say Something

Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple Computers with Steve Jobs and some other guy back in the 70s and still works for and has stock in the company, was the first in linefor the newest version of the iPad.

Steve Wozniak, of Apple

Not in the metaphorical sense of first in line, although probably that, too.  He’s probably had a working prototype for months.  No, he went out to the store at around 6 p.m. Thursday night and camped out until 8 in the morning, like a crazed Harry Potter fan.

Makes sense to me, showing the real company team spirit and all that.  Of course, internet commenters are expressing the usual range of opinions.  Some are talking about the product, some in praise of Wozniak and some in criticism (most of which has nothing to do with this story), some point out the futility and pointlessness of such a venture, that any feeling of victory you achieve is short lived when you realize that you could have bought the same product a little later in the day after the shops have been open a couple of hours and you’re left with kind of an empty and foolish feeling for having wasted several hours of your life.

But the comments which bothered me were those saying “Hey, it’s just a publicity stunt,” as if there was something wrong with that, as if Wozniak was somehow scamming the public by false enthusiasm.  They seem to think they are some kind of supersleuth who has managed to read between the lines and crack the next great Nigerian businessman scam.

Of course it was a publicity stunt, Einstein.  Darn good one, too.  Got into the news.  All positive.  Didn’t cost the company any extra money.  And, as long as you’ve got a bit to eat, enough to drink and entertaining people around you, standing in line’s no big deal.

I suspect these are the same commenters who hang out at the gossip sites and, no matter how stunningly beautiful the actress in question, they are ready with the disparaging remarks.  “I just can’t see what everybody sees in Emma Watson.  I see better looking women than that every day.”

I can sort of understand the need to say something on every subject.  I’ve got that bug.  If I’m going to spend 5 minutes reading something, I’m damned sure going to make a comment on it.

But for some people it always, always has to be something negative.
