A group of very wealthy and adventurous gentlemen of the early 21st century have decided to band together on a venture of great risk but even greater reward, a bold gamble which could change life on earth forevermore.
Serious.
Film director James Cameron is probably just sick of this Titanic shit already, maybe he’s interested in movie making in space, maybe he’s got too much money for his own good, I don’t know. The other 3 are all Google hot shot billionaires: Eric Schmidt, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. They’ve set up a company called Planetary Resources and the company’s goal is to find, reach and mine an asteroid.
This is awesome. It could really happen. It doesn’t depend on any government decision or public debate. They’ve decided to do it and they can probably afford to do it, if the technology works. Unless the asteroids are inhabited (which is a million to one long shot and would make the whole project even awesomer) then they are totally up for grabs, and could contain trillions of dollars worth of useful minerals.
I don’t know how they’re planning on getting any of it back to earth, though. That could be a little tricky. The phrase “a few billion tons of flying gobs of heavy metals hurtling inexorably toward the tiny planet Earth” crosses my mind for some reason.
But they’re a smart bunch of guys, and I’m sure they’ve got some people even smarter than they are working on that.
Good luck, guys!
