Random Jabberings

Just going to dash out some random thoughts tonight before going to bed, it is late and the one thing in the news worth writing about, the Wisconsin recall vote, is just too depressing for words.  This should not even be close.  And Obama could certainly have done a bit more to help.  Anyway, fingers crossed for Tom Barrett.  GOTV,WI!

So, if you were looking for brilliant political insights or scathing sarcasm, tonight’s not the night.

Had a slow day today.  Well, sort of.  My 3 hour class in Stodulky canceled again, so i had a long break in the morning and worked on a poem for tonight’s poetry reading, it’s something I’ve been working on for a couple of weeks and usually when it takes me that long to write something, it’s crap because it’s forced, plus I left this to the last minute so I was worried that it might be double crap and I’d just have to abort.  In fact, when I left for the lesson at Chodov, I still felt it needed another verse but I more or less got that written in my head on the bus, and after Chodov I had an hour or so to kill because my 6 year olds had canceled, too, so I stopped at the McDonald’s at Budejovicka for coffee, so I copied it down there.

It was maybe the best part, too.

Now, one thing about today, one piece of modern folk wisdom confirmed: if you carry an umbrella, you’ll never have to use it.  The sky was gray today, so I carried one.  Every time it started raining really heavy, I was inside.

My last lesson, from 5:30 to 6:30, is in a cafe in Vršovice and we were sitting at an outdoor table, under a big, green, beer umbrella when the skies opened up and the rain came down like a burst dam.  It was a close encounter with the forces of nature, and a wonder to behold.

Then I went to Alchemy, the poetry reading.  It was a pretty good night.  The featured performer, Peter Boyce LeCouteur,  sang “imaginary folk songs from a fictional island where my family never really lived” and he was great.  Powerful voice, powerful songs.

Then there was the usual mix of good and bad.  Sometimes these evenings seem to have accidental themes, tonight there were a couple of pieces about  cancer and a couple about suicide (one was about a guy who was contemplating suicide because he’d been diagnosed with  cancer).  My poem was about a train.  Shallow, that way, I am.

Anyway, my bit went O.K.  It was a pretty good day.  Good night.

Do you still get paid when they cancel? Sounds like a busy day.

Umbrella: better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

“Fictional island”: sounds like Puff the Magic Dragon.

  2. Depends on the arrangement we have with the student. In these cases, no.
