Happy Midsummer!

This is it.  Longest day of the year.  Well, today or tomorrow, I hear it both ways and I’m not about to look it up since it’s a difference of a few minutes and I’ve got no objection whatsoever to celebrating both.

This is the peak of the year, the height of the  season, a golden moment in the annual cycle.  The trees are all green, strawberries are ripe, the flowers are in full bloom.  For lovers of hot weather and fun at the beach, for sun worshippers (both the lying on  a beach chair kind and the nutty neo-Druid kind) this is a sacred time.  After today, it’s all downhill, but it will take another 3 months or so before we notice it.

My schedule is about to change dramatically, as I will lose all of my in-school classes.  Some of my adult classes, too.  People are so conditioned after 12 years or more of school that for the rest of their lives, studying in the summer just seems weird.

It has been hot here in Prague.  Hot and muggy.  It means my students aren’t paying attention, as the sun comes in through the window and asks them if they can come out and play.

So, it’s a lazy time of year.  In that spirit, tonight’s blog is a short one.
