Wouldn’t it be nice if people said what they meant and meant what they said? Well, maybe not in interpersonal relationships, that might get ugly pretty quick, but in the public arena, when you are talking about passing new laws, it’s really wrong to flat out lie about your reasons.
For once, tonight, I am not ranting about American politics. The Canadian government has banned foreign women from working in strip clubs and said that those who are currently working will be sent home when their visas expire. They say it is to fight human trafficking, but I call bullshit. If you want to prevent human trafficking (which, I hope everybody agrees, is a worthy goal) then you totally legalize the sex trade, get these girls licenses, let them operate in the open and have a union, make it respectable. Sort of like with marijuana, legalization would push the criminal element out of the business.
I suspect they are just sucking up to the churchy types, for votes.
To be fair, there’s a bit of disingenuousness (lying) on team porno as well. A spokesman for the Adult Entertainment Association of Canada said “The word exotic means foreign, and that’s what people want to see.” Oh, come on. I’ve been to a few stripper bars in my time and the question “where is that girl from” never even crossed my mind.
If you’re going to argue against the law, argue against it on its merits.
The new law won’t really make any difference. There are plenty of Canadian girls who are perfectly qualified and willing to take the jobs, I’m sure. Also, there’s a loophole (of course – there are always loopholes) Foreign girls who are in Canada on student visas can still work as strippers as long as it’s only part time.
This reinforces my point that the holier than thou politicos who pushed for this law didn’t really intend to change anything, just to score political points. But, of course, they can’t admit to that.

I bet there will be a big jump in foreign student enrollment. They might flunk out, but they’ll make good money while they’re at it.
