Mars and Venus

Yeah, I saw Clinton’s speech.  I thought it was great.  Everybody thought it was great.  So, I don’t really want to talk about that.

I read this articlethe other day.  When I saw the headline “Men and Women  See the  World Differently” I thought, well, duh.  This is the basis of 50% of comedy.  That is the reason women pay about ten times as much as we do for a haircut.

Eye to Eye

But, since it’s on the science page, I thought, maybe they’ll go a little bit deeper than that and talk about how we see the world differently because of our different cultural roles, the way we have been raised and societal expectations.  Like, why do men like films where lots of people die quickly and women prefer films where one person dies slowly?

Then I read into it a little bit and realized they were talking about actual, physiological differences.  Still, no big surprise.   There are some pretty obvious physiological differences between men and women, that is what differentiates us into men and women.  It stands to reason that there might be subtler, less obvious differences. (this touches on the race issue as well.  There are visible physical differences between the races, therefore it’s conceivable that there are other differences as well.  I don’t think it’s racist at all to point  out that black people  are great runners, or that Asians are good at math.)

I was interested in the differences, but still not very surprised.  Men are quicker to  see movement, and small objects.  I guess that came in handy for hunting.  Women are better at discerning subtle shades of color.  I guess that came in handy while choosing plants.

It’s good to know where we came from.  The  question is, what are we looking for now?
