Nice Baboons Live Longer

This study shows that baboons who are nicer (in the sense of more sociable) live longer.

File that under things that are totally obvious when you think about it, but it’s nice (in the sense of rather good) that a scientific study has confirmed it.

A friendly baboon is a healthy baboon

Baboons who are nice have lots of friends, they find desirable mates, raise families.  I guess the scientific view is that this leads to contentment, lower blood pressure and maybe actually a greater desire to live.  Same with humans.  It’s rather obvious,  when you think about it.

I think there’s another, more immediate factor, especially in baboon society but in human society as well.  It’s good to have other people on your side, other people who have your back, so to speak.

We are a bit more evolved than baboons, chimps and orangutans and they all have more violent societies than ours, but we are the ones with nuclear weapons.  It is important that people around the world learn to be a little bit friendlier with each other, and nation with nation.  If so, perhaps we can extend the life-span of our species.  Perhaps forever.

If not, we’re in deep shit.
