A lot of people are writing tonight about this photo, and how it was obviously a staged photo-op of Paul Ryan washing dishes at a homeless center, with nary a homeless person in sight, but I’m not too worried about that.
It’s a standard photo-op and, in the staged photo-op department, I’m willing to stipulate that both parties probably do it. Not nearly as damaging as lying about his marathon time, and that’s not nearly as bad as just being a right wing jerk who wants to end social security.
It does not even get my Republican Scumbag of the day award, which has to go to Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin. Sure, it was his half-wit son who made the ignorant birther joke (in November, we can send Barack Obama back to Kenya). But he did it on behalf of his Dad’s campaign, on the stage, with a microphone, in a room full of Republicans, who all laughed, including Reince Priebus.
But neither Tommy Thompson, who is running for the Senate against Tammy Baldwin, nor his slobberingly loose-lipped offspring, have apologized. Sure, a lot of news outlets have run headlines saying “Thompson apologizes blah blah blah” but he didn’t. Neither of them. What we got was this statement from Thompson’s campaign: “The governor has addressed this with his son, just like any father would do. Jason Thompson said something he should not have, and he apologizes.”
That’s it. Neither of the Thompson’s are willing to stand on stage, with a microphone and say “We are well aware that Barack Obama was born in the United States. We are sincerely sorry for deliberately and dishonestly pandering to a bunch of racist losers with sub-triple digit IQs, just to win this election.”
They didn’t even say that what was said was wrong, just that Jason should not have said it. And they didn’t even say that. The campaign said it.
No Republican, and that includes most poorly named baby of the year (1972) Reince Priebus, has actually apologized for this comment. He’s the chairman of the Republican party, he was right there, and he hasn’t said squat.
And the press appears to be letting them get away with it.
