Well, the most interesting item from last night’s debate, for me, was Mitt Romney saying “Syria is Iran’s only ally in the Arab world. It’s their route to the sea.” Now, technically, perhaps, it’s not a total lie. He did not say it’s Iran’s only route to the sea, as a quick glance at a map will show that Iran doesn’t actually need a route to the sea, because they are on the sea. He also didn’t say that it was a direct route to the sea, because you’d have to go across Iraq. So, you can say that Syria is Iran’s route to the sea in the same way that Chicago is New York’s route to Mississippi. You wouldn’t be able to disprove it in a court of law, but it’s still bullshit.
As political gaffes go, it may not be as disastrous as Sarah Palin’s saying she could see Russia from her house (which, in fairness, Sarah Palin never said – that was Tina Fey – but, close enough) or Herman Cain with his Uzbeki-beki-beki-stan-stan, but it’s in the same category.
People who are too stupid and lazy to look at a map before spouting off about important issues in front of millions of people do not deserve to be president.
The other thing in today’s news that got me, that truly proved we live in a world gone stupid and it’s not just the United States, was that a court in Italy sentenced a group of seismologists to 6 years each because they said a major earthquake was unlikely, and then there was a terrible earthquake that killed hundreds of people.
So, seismologists! Just predict from now on that there are always impending earthquakes and we should immediately and forthwith evacuate everywhere that’s anywhere near a fault line. People will know it’s bullshit, but at least it will keep you out of jail.

Romney has made this “route to the sea” comment about a dozen times before, and has continued saying it, despite fact-checkers claiming it’s false, based on geography. You’d think by now they would have started to realize that his comment is not about geography – it’s about sanction-driven, trade route realities.
This is no gaffe. This is not a case of Romney being ignorant of geography, it’s a case of the so-called “fact checkers” being ignorant of the trade routes now being used as a result of sanctions.
Romney was speaking in the context of the debate topic on foreign policy and the sanctions restricting the finances and trade of Iran. Although Iran is indeed located on the seacoast of the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf, the international trade sanctions have restricted and impeded its ability to transport armaments and other goods through its own seaports. To defeat these trade sanctions, Iran has resorted to using its air transportation to transport goods through an air corridor in Iraqi airspace into Syria and its seaports, such as Latakia.
I will say that there are many valid reasons to find fault with both candidates – this just doesn’t happen to be one of them.
If you are talking about air transport, they also have corridors to the sea through Morocco and Indonesia, for instance.
I am very worried that if Romney wins, he will find some excuse to start a war with Iran, or Syria, or somebody in the Middle East, it’s all the same to the MIC, they sell the weapons either way.
I’m talking about the corridor which they are actually using – the closest one not blocked by international sanctions, and the most effective for them to achieve their objectives, like sending arms to Hamas and Hezbollah.
Yeah, if I were a university student studying to be a seismologist, I’d be more than a little worried about this ruling. Will they arrest politicians that play fast and loose with our money, causing budget deficits? If only…
