Does Abortion Matter?

Senator Ron Johnson (teabagger-Wisconsin) is not up for re-election this year, so he can pretty much say any damned fool thing that pops into his head, and he does. Today he said that abortion doesn’t matter at all as an election issue.  I would agree with him that it’s not the major issue, but if it weren’t an issue at all, he wouldn’t have even been asked about it and yet he was.

Teabagger Senator Ron Johnson

Newt Gingrich also said today that he wishes people would just “get over” Richard Mourdock’s medieval statements on abortion.  Well, Newt, we’re not the ones who brought the issue up in the 1st place.

That would be Todd Akin, the Republican candidate for Senator in Missouri, who said that in cases of “legitimate” rape, a woman’s body had ways to prevent pregnancy (“to shut that whole thing down” is what he said.)

Or maybe the blame lies with congressional candidate Joe Walsh, a candidate  only a teabagger  could love, who said there was  no need for an  exemption to an abortion plan for the  mother because no women die from  child  birth  any more, due to modern medicine.

What Akin and Walsh said exhibited both a ridiculously misogynistic mindset and an incredibly ignorance of female biology.  If they were high school students, their classmates would laugh them right out of biology class, a la Nelson Muntz.

What Mourdock said, that rape pregnancies were God’s will, was just plain evil.  He has tried to apologize, sort of, in his unapologetic Republican way.  He’s said that he’s not in favor of rape, no, not at all.  But, you know, God….

Then there’s vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, who wanted to amend abortion laws so that only victims of violent rape could get abortions.  So, guys, if you are planning to rape a girl specifically in order to get her pregnant, roofies are still O.K.*

So, Newt, we cannot just “get over” this.   Republicans continue to talk about it, and whenever they do, they spew nonsense.  Hateful, ignorant, anachronistic nonsense.  Because that’s just the kind of people they are.

*that was meant as sarcasm.  roofies are not O.K., at all.
