I wouldn’t really say I’m a patriotic American at all. I’m just a liberal ideologue and a political junkie. I have no intention of ever living in America again, I believe that the real solutions to mankind’s problems must be international, and I’m not terribly bothered if America loses influence in the world and falls from it’s position of leadership.
My wife is much more of a patriotic American than I am, and she’s Czech. It was a foregone conclusion that I was going to be watching election news on TV tonight, and reading any liveblogs I can find, but it was her idea to call it an election party. She got the kids to make some decorations, we’ve got hand drawn American flags taped up here and there, we’re sitting around the flat wearing name tags, and have red and blue lanterns hanging on the balcony (we couldn’t find white). We had burritos for dinner, with Pepsi and ice cream, and she made this pumpkin pie. Which is delicious, btw.
Just family, but that can be a great party.
About the election: It looks like it’s going to be just as nasty and dirty as anybody expected. There are already tales of crooked voting machines in Pennsylvania pulling the old switcheroo, creative voter suppression in Florida and many other anecdotes of skullduggery and shenanigans. Still, as Howard Dean has pointed out, if the Republicans carry Ohio, it will only be by fraud. Unfortunately, fraud is always a very real possibility.
I’m not going to stay up all night and watch it. I’ll get up at 6 or so, which would be midnight in New York, and something should be known by then. Fingers crossed.
