I’ve never been a really huge fan of Gerard DePardieu but the Asterix movies are kind of funny. If you have kids you have to watch them and as long as you have to watch them, you might as well enjoy them, that’s how I see it.
Also, I’m a big believer in separating the artist and the art. I don’t care that Mel Gibson is a ranting, alcoholic, hate filled anti-semite. Apocalypto was awesome. I know that Elia Kazan was a narc for Joe McCarthy. He still directed some films which will live forever.
So, that’s where I am with Gerard DePardieu. Actually, even less. It’s none of my business if he wants to give up his French passport and become a Russian citizen. I think he’s being kind of a dumbass* because certainly, somebody with his kind of money could hire an economic consultant/tax lawyer who could coach him on some way to pay somewhat less in taxes by sensible investments and besides, he’s not just giving up French citizenship but, by extension, EU citizenship. But, he’s made up his mind, he’s gone and become a Russian citizen, because of their 13% flat tax, and more power to him, I guess. It will make it somewhat harder for him to stay close to his ex-wife, numerous ex-girlfriends, and 3 children (3 different mothers), who are all French.
Probably not, though. Probably won’t even affect his ability to film in France or anywhere else. Rich people come and go as they like. Visa problems are for poor folks.
It reminds me of the case of Eduardo Saverin, the facebook guy who got like 100 million or so just for loaning Zuckerberg some paltry sum to start up facebook back when they were best buds at Harvard, and then he renounced his American citizenship to go to Singapore or some such ridiculous place.
I guess, when you have that much money, it doesn’t matter where you live.
*also, what’s up with Putin? What does he get out of this, except to piss off the French who, unless I misunderstand the French, probably couldn’t care less?
