Self Fulfilling Prophecy

I know it’s not nice to be critical of somebody who’s just died, and it’s even more horrible to laugh at them, and that’s kind of what I’m about to do in tonight’s blog.  I’m going to go ahead and do it, I just want you all to know I feel properly guilty about it.

Keith Ratliff- He lived by the gun, he died by the gun

Keith Ratliff- He lived by the gun, he died by the gun

Also, I’m sure his wife is upset over it, and I don’t wish to add to her pain.  His two year old  son will never know his daddy, so I don’t actually feel too bad for him.  In fact, he may well be better off with his stepdad(s) to be, considering how his biological father was a moron.

The reason I’m going ahead and writing this blog anyway, though, is because dead is dead and we can’t bring them back so the idea, as I see it, should be to make it so that fewer people die in the future.  That is the spirit behind the anti-gun movement, all anti-war movements, and every do-gooder attempt to make the world a better place.

Keith Ratliff was a gun nut.  He enjoyed high powered military style weapons.  He was a regular contributor to FPSRussia, a YouTube channel which shows lots of gun videos.  Sort of like  Jackass, but Jackassier.

When I first saw the story, I thought maybe he was in the other Georgia, the one that’s a country, because of the channel’s name.  I don’t know why it’s called FPSRussia.  Ratliff was a southern boy who lived in good old squeal like a pig Georgia.

Anyway, a few months back Ratliff left this message on Twitter: “I went to the movies with my pistol in my pocket the whole time I was praying that somebody would try to pull a Batman!”

Praying.  First off, it doesn’t make me feel safer at the cinema knowing that there might be vigilantes with pistols in their pockets.  Secondly, that just says that he was itching for trouble.  That’s  why I say it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

He was found dead the other day, with a gunshot wound to the head that was apparently not self-inflicted.  So, having a gun didn’t save his life.  Having a bloody personal armory with as much firepower as a Mexican drug cartel  didn’t save his life.  Probably put it more at risk.

I’m not saying his death was politically motivated.  Anti-gun people are extremely unlikely to shoot somebody in the head, no matter how much it might look like poetic justice.

His views on guns, however, put him right in the middle of a whole bunch of other people who loved guns and probably a lot of them had fantasies very much like Ratliff’s in the darkened cinema.

One of them acted on those fantasies (or maybe they just wanted to steal some guns), and Keith Ratliff is dead.  That’s a shame for his friends and family, but he brought it on himself.
