Mostly Useless Gadgets

Normally I avoid the slide shows over at the Haff a Ton of comPost because they tend to be stupid and a waste of time.  When they say 10 friendliest cities in the world or 12 worst gift  ideas, you know it’s just going to be somebody’s opinion, you’re going to disagree with most of them, and why bother in the first place because you know it was just an exercise in filling up space, which you really don’t need to do in an internet newspaper.  Beyond a certain point, bigger is not better.  It just builds up and builds  up until you have an iceberg of unnecessary verbiage which neither enlightens nor informs.

It’s a slow news week, though, and I figured out of 13 new high tech gadgets there might be one or two that were interesting, and that turned out to be about right.  Still, it’s great that cool new devices (even if most of them are superfluous) are being developed at such a pace and it indicates that the future will be a pretty cool place, except of course for all the horribly obnoxious people who are bound to be living there.

I don’t understand why two people need to look at the same TV screen and see different programs, although I found the technology fascinating.  The device that lets you transfer your video games to the toilet so you can continue uninterrupted, on the other hand, wasn’t even interesting technology.  The smart diaper is not really so smart.  Sure, it sends a message to your phone to let you know when junior has pooped his pants, but nature has ways of alerting you to that, too.  The fishfinder has been around for years and I’m sure it works, but it just strikes me as unsportsmanlike.

But, I liked the plant doctor thing, because I like houseplants but have no idea how often or how much to water them, and therefore they tend to die on me.  The long distance sex toy is interesting.  Dehumanizing, but maybe kind of fun.  Housecleaning  robots and robocars were included on the  list, too, and I  suspect they will have a huge, and positive, impact on  our future.

Mostly, though, what  this slide show indicated was that there is no annoyance so trivial that somebody won’t go to great lengths to eliminate it.
