Guns. Fucking Guns.

It seems to be all that’s in the news lately.  Possibly, that’s because there’s really not that much going on in the world, nobody’s really bothered if the French want to send troops into some messed up African country, the next full blown financial panic isn’t scheduled for another two months, and Lindsey Lohan hasn’t been arrested for anything in over a month now.

He survived Iraq, to be killed in Texas

Possibly, it’s because the Huffington Post has decided to headline every gun story, everything in which more than one person was killed or injured, every accidental death, the whole shmear, and why not?  It is accurate.  There really is a huge gun problem.

The  gun nuts, who keep saying that guns make us safer and that there are millions of responsible gun owners out there who could ever have a fatal gun accident because they don’t even keep the weapon in the same room with the kids, keep proving the argument for our side.

The most recent case is that of Navy Seal Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield, also a veteran.  They were at a shooting range, had guns in hand and, presumably, knew how to use them very well, being military professionals and all.  They were still shot and killed by somebody who, presumably, wanted them dead.

We have no idea yet what the killer’s motivations were.  Maybe he knew the men personally and had some major grievance.  Maybe their car was parked in his reserved space.  Maybe he was just completely crazy and thought he was in Iraq or something.  He’s in custody, and hopefully we’ll find all that out eventually.

The point is, if guns kept you safe, Kyle and Littlefield would still be alive.  They don’t.   They aren’t.  If these two guys couldn’t stop their assailant, what makes anybody think teachers will be able to?

Perhaps it’s a little bit tacky to use these 2 deaths to score a  point about gun control.  But, damn it, it’s a good point.

Yes, the pro-gun lobby argue every citizen needs assault weapons because “the government and police might attack them in their homes and try to take over”. Then in the next minute the same men argue that “the time is coming when you call 911 no one will come due to budget cuts, etc., so you need to protect yourself”. Any contradiction to justify their love of guns, power and perhaps profit from the manufacture of weapons.
