Well, this is a mildly amusing video to watch, and it’s only a few minutes long. It is not, however, an indication of artificial intelligence or even a significant step in that direction.
The “film” (I use the quotes because it’s not really a film, it’s a video. It’s 3 minutes. Films, lately, are 3 hours, which is too long. I don’t know exactly where we should draw the line, but this is not something you would pay money to see at the cinema, and therefore it is not a film.) was written, or co-written anyway, by a chatbot, which is, apparently, a program which can mimic language usage and usually gets the grammar and syntax right, but it says incredibly stupid, off topic things.
Like, when the human writer asks what they should name the hero, the chatbot comes up with “stomach.” It’s not AI, it’s just random words. It’s like playing a game of mad-libs or one of those stupid things that go around facebook where phrase A corresponds to the month you were born and phrase B corresponds to the color of shirt you’re wearing, and phrase C corresponds to the 1st letter of your last name and you put them all together and it is the name of your new band or whatever.
There’s nothing intelligent about it but is it creative? A little bit. I have some students who are less creative, despite, technically, being human. It does create something new, and if the definition of art is just something that’s never been done before, then it’s art.
However, an artist who is worth their salt is not just trying to churn out random shite and avoid the technical inconvenience of plagiarism charges – an artist should have something to say, and the computer does not.
If we are waiting for a pure artificial intelligence, a machine that thinks like a human being, we will be waiting a long time. The machines are not in any hurry to evolve. On the other hand, if we are willing to accept some kind of hybrid intelligence, a blend of human and computer as a form of AI, then it is already here.
The internet is made up of millions of individuals, but it does seem to have a mind of its own.
